Upsets highlight PSL volley semis

Upsets were the order of the day in the Junior Varsity division of the 2007 Private School League yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.Defending champion Whispering Palms marched through the finals after pulling off a hard-earned 25-23, 18-25, 15-4 upset win over the top-ranked Saipan International School Green, while third-seed Seventh Day Adventist ousted No. 2 Grace Christian Academy, 17-25, 25-10, 15-11.The fifth-ranked Whispering Palms arranged a title showdown against SDA in today's finals at 4:30pm after the 3:30pm consolation match between GCA and SIS Green. The games will be played at Whispering Palms in Navy Hill.It was a tightly fought contest as the defending champions managed to save two set points to comeback and win the first set.SIS Green then bounced back from an opening set loss and dominated the net en route to a 25-18 second set win to force a rubber.SIS Green looked poised to ending Whispering Palms' title bid when they went up 3-0 as Becca Newman's wards were pumped up in the game.Whispeing Palms, however, got their acts together and scored five straight points to go up 5-3 then leaned on Caleb Arriola's seven service points to pull away and secure the win.Errors did not help the SIS Green cause as they let the game slip away from their hands.It was a painful loss for the SIS Green after going undefeated the whole season that earned them the top seeding.Whispering Palms won the title last year when they beat the Melissa Halaby-led SIS crew.In the varsity tournament, No. 4 Marianas Baptist Academy and third-seed GCA defeated the upset-minded and fifth-ranked Calvary Christian Academy and Northern Marianas Academy.The MBA Storm swept past CCA, 25-23, 25-16, while the GCA Eagles clawed the NMA Stingrays, 25-10, 25-15.CCA battles MBA into a tight contest in the first set but ran out of steam in the second frame to let the Storm march into the semifinal round against the top-ranked Mt. Carmel School Knights.In the Eagles-Stingrays match, GCA was merciless against the Stingrays as they opened up with an 11-1 lead capitalizing on NMA's errors and miscalculated shots.GCA even led 23-4 then allowed NMA to make a brief run before closing out with two set points.The Eagles then put its second stringers in the second set and delivered the killer blow that earned them a semis showdown against No. 2 SIS.The second round of the playoffs in the varsity division will be played on Monday at 3:30pm and 4:30pm at Whispering Palms. Tuesday will be the consolation and finals matches at MHS Gym at 3:30pm and 4:30pm.

Whispering Palms survives Sharks

YESTERDAY’s playoff match between Whispering Palms and Calvary Christian Academy was not for the weak heart.
Whispering Palms survived the CCA Sharks in three tightly contested sets to advance to the semifinals of the CNMI Private School junior varsity volleyball tournament.
Calvary entered the playoff match with a slight advantage as the Sharks finished the regular season in fourth place. The defending champion Whispering Palms placed fifth.
With Caleb Arriola, Ilia Corella, Hunter Thorpe, Amy Arenovski, Crosby Schultz and Min Joo Jung starting for the Navy Hill-based school, the defending champion won the opening set, 25-18.
Whispering Palms’ bench took charge in the second set and had a neck-and-neck battle against the Sharks, who escaped with a 25-13 triumph to force a third set.
The Sharks picked up where it left off in the deciding set, as Whispering Palms failed to return CCA’s serves.
Calvary caught Whispering Palms flatfooted in the first half of the last set and took a commanding 8-0 lead.
Whispering Palms’ coach Mark McDonald sued for time to restore order on the team. The temporary lull brought Whispering Palm back to life as it move within two 6-8.
Hunter Thorpe sparked the comeback when he saved the ball down the left sideline near the Sharks’ bench. Christian Miller, who was part of Whispering Palms’ second unit, but played in the crucial third set, received the ball and returned it to a napping CCA defender, and scored their first point
It was CCA coach Scott Norman’s turn to call a time out and he made the right decision, as the Sharks regained the form and moved a point away from winning the match, 14-8.
The next plays were nerve wracking, especially for Whispering Palms, as one mistake would mean goodbye to their title defense bid.
But Thorpe would not let his team down as he delivered the killer blows that led to perhaps the biggest comeback of the season.
After a CCA wide return, Thorpe’s stepped unto the service area and Calvary and Whispering Palms supporters watched how the fifth grader tore the Sharks apart with his impressive serves.
Actually, Thorpe’s serves were not that explosives, but they have a certain spin and very tricky that made it hard for Calvary to return.
His first served landed in the middle with Calvary’s players on the backcourt a step slower for the ball.
Hunter scored for more aces with the ball either dropping near the net when Calvary players were moving at the backline or at the middle passing the Sharks’ blockers and not reaching the backline defenders.
His last ace with the ball dropping a few inches from the net tied the game at 14-all.
With the momentum shifting to Whispering Palms’ side, Hunter continued to serve well and his game was completed by his teammates willingness to hustle for the ball.
A CCA wide returned moved Whispering Palms within a point of wrapping up the match.
Thorpe served for the match point with the ball heading to the back line. A CCA player hit it, but the ball did not cross the other court, yet and instead another CCA player made the second hit . Still the second hit was not enough to return the ball to Whispering Palms. With the ball heading to the right sideline, a CCA player chased it and hit it, but the ball landed near Calvary’s net capping the Sharks’ end-game collapse and handing Whispering Palms the win.
“It was one of the greatest comeback I’ve ever seen,” said Tom Weindl, who despite the air-conditioned venue (MHS Gym) was perspiring due to the intense action.
Thorpe, who was still gasping for breath with his long stint at the service area, could not believe they won the game.
“All I knew when I was at the service are was I didn’t have to make a mistake. All the serves must be perfect and my teammates will take care of the rest,” Thorpe said.
Whispering Palms’ next assignment is the winner of the SIS Green vs MCS tiff. Saipan International School topped the regular season while Mt. Carmel finished last.
Other pairings are Grace Christian Academy vs SIS Blue and Seventh Day Adventist vs Saipan Community School.
The three other playoff games were also played yesterday at the MHS Gym, but results of these matches were unavailable at press time.

Yesterday we won the volleyball game against Calvary Christian Academy. In the first game we won 18-25. In the second game we lost 13-25. In the last game which was to 15 instead of 25 we were down 14-8 and we had had the serve and it was up to Hunter Thorpe to make all his serves in or we would not make it to the semi finals. Hunter Thorpe served all of the serves in and we made it to 16 (because we had to win by two) and we won the game! YES! Thank you to all the volleyball players for doing their best in the game! We have a game against SIS green at MHS at 4:30. Good Luck Team!!!

Today we finished all of our mysteries and read them to each other. On Friday we have a spelling test due. This Friday is a half day. School ends at 11:00. Next week Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are all half days. Wednesday (Halloween) is a full day!

to tell us about Pakistan. Sohail is from Pakistan
and his wife Paula is from Saipan. They talked
about Ramadan. He talked about how they can
not eat from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm and how there
is a siren that goes off when it is 5:00 pm so when
the siren goes off everyone can eat so everyone
stops and stops everything that they are doing
and they go eat. Sohail also talked to us about the
culture of the Muslim religion and how Pakistan is
different than India.

This was a game that you would have to dribble the ball
around and Coach Fujita-San would blow the whistle and

Whispering Palms School was adopted by an orange cat a year ago. Although she was afraid of all people she soon learned to trust because of the big hearts of our students and Staff (especially Auntie Goril). The students learned to care for her. They named her Beauty and fed her their left-overs. Soon Beauty's boyfriend "Cutie" moved in. Before we knew it, Beauty became a mom to baby Tang. We have tried to find the cats a good home but so far we have been unsuccessful. We now have 3 cats. We fear that if we don't take action the cat population will continue to rise. The only veterinarian still performing these operations will do the female surgeries for $260.00 and the male surgeries for $200.00. Our target is to raise $720.00. We have two females and one male and we fear Beauty might be pregnant again.

Morning Bake Sale. So far we have raised $140.00! We are almost able to get one cat fixed!

A Taste of India by Maddie and Raina

Today we went to Taste of India, we ate Indian food. We also got to look at their tandoori oven. We learned a lot about the food they eat in India!
The Indian food was colorful and scented because of the many spices they used such as saffron.

Everyone liked comparing the restaurant's food to what we had learned about in our books.
The food at the restaurant looked like a traditional Indian meal.
The food was tasty.
It was interesting to compare the Indian movies to our movies.
Whoops, Raina got caught eating on camera!
Some of the food was really sour or spicy.
Some of our parents came too.

We also got to try special rice pudding, it tasted like chai.

The tandoori oven is really hot! The employees said it was very expensive to bring the Tandoori oven to Saipan. Tandoori ovens are the way many breads and meats are cooked in India. Traditionally they are made of clay.

We really liked the puffy bread.

We were really full after the meal!

There was a theft at a nearby school. The school had a science fair a few months ago and one of the student projects was called, "solution X, A Cure For The Common Cold." It generated a lot of interest at the fair, at the end of the fair a parent even tried to steal it. The project was put in a school safe, but this morning the safe was found open, and the science fair project was missing. In it's place was a note written with a black tipped pen. The note said:
"You can catch a cold, but you can't catch me, I'll run like a nose unless I get a fee. Number 1 with six zeros after. Pardon while I launch into mechanical laughter. Bwa ha,ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha"

Here are our suspects:

A. Kat Chacold: She works for a company that makes medicine. She states that she is not a common thief. She was however asking the student who did the project a lot of questions. What if she stole the recipe for her company? That would be worth a fortune!

B. Ed Chew This muscle bound home economics teacher is angry that they took away his electric mixers due to budget cuts. There's even a rumor he is giving steroids to the kids in his class to build up their muscles so they can make cakes that are light and fluffy. What if Ed Chew stole the project to sell, and make money to buy equipment for his class?
C. Ronnie Noze: he is the Principal of the school and coach of the local champion softball team, who always seem to have a runny nose. It is also true that Ronie Noze has the best pitcher on his team. She always has a cold but never misses a game. Some people wonder if her runny nose has something to do with why the balls she pitches are so hard to hit. Maybe Ronnie Nose stole the projects to prevent a cure for the common cold. Maybe he's afraid his pitcher wouldn't be as good if she didn't have a runny nose?
D. Ivana Tishu: A mother with a big family. She is dedicated to her children and professes not to steal. Her 6 kids are always sick and the family uses many tissues. They have had to buy larger garbage cans. She may be trying to save her family money by stealing the cure or save the landfills....
E. Noah Snotme: His daughter goes to the school that was robbed, but he doesn't work there or have anything to do with it. Noah was angry because his daughter's science project, "Cosmetics for Cats," was out shown by the "Solution X, the Cure for the Common Cold" project. He worked very hard on the project. Oh yeah, I think his daughter helped a little too. So perhaps he's angry about his daughter's project being rejected, and decided to get revenge by stealing the "Cure for the Common Cold" project.
F. Hannah Kercheef: She is a successful clothing designer. She had made a lot of money selling shirts she designed with super absorbent material on the sleeves. They are called "hanky sleeves" and they are for wiping your nose. Hmmmm. Maybe Ms. Kercheef is afraid that if the common cold is cured, she'll be out of business.
Luckily the cops were able to identify these suspects and found them all in possession of a black felt tipped marker. The same type used on the ransom note! We have the chromatography sample from the ransom note as well as the 6 markers that were confiscated from the suspects. We tested the pens...

After testing all of the pens we identified that the pen found with Noah Snotme had the same chromatography design as the ransom note.

Is this enough evidence to convict him?
Our defense lawyers deliberated over this one.

The bigger question to ask really is, why do some pigments creep up the chromatography paper higher than others????? Hummmmmm....

Divya's stories from India by Clay and Jake

Today we had a special guest!
Her name was Divya Sharma. She told us a story about her mom crossing the border from Pakistan into India during the Partition. Divya's mom was 6 years old when she and her family were forced out of their home in Pakistan. They had to move out because they were Hindu. She was separated from her family because a lot of people were crowding and pushing to get on the other side of the border amidst gunfire and violence. Divya's mom later found her family six months after she was separated. She found her family with the help of one of her parent's friends who noticed her in a refugee camp.

Marin models a traditional Indian Sari. Divya also brought in music. We learned about traditional Indian instruments such as the sitar and the santoor. She also patiently answered so many of our questions.

Hi All,
Sorry for the lack of pictures yesterday. We had a computer glitch. We are back on line with pictures from yesterday as well as today to share. In Literature we are reading Hans Christian Anderson, in Social Studies we are learning about India, and in Science we are working with Microscopes. We are also working on persuasive speeches and concrete poetry this week. Don't forget to write something everyday in your thinking log. I will collect those on Fridays.

How does a drop of water magnify things?

Yes Joon, the dome shape does bend the light!

We experimented with water drops on newsprint. We used wax paper as our barrier so that the newspaper wouldn't get ruined.

The larger the drop and less dome shaped the less the magnification. The higher the dome the more the print was magnified.

Reading Running and Writing!!

First Auntie Brenda read us a short story while we stretched.

Then we ran, jogged, or walked for 20 minutes while we pondered the meaning of the short stories.

After we finished running we recorded how many laps we each individually did, what we considered about our story, and how the general running went. We were excited to drip sweat in our running journals!!! :)

The outcome of this writing exercise was awesome!

Summary

Marly’s dad just got back from war and they are going to Maple Hill for vacation. Along the way their car got stuck in the snow so Marly and Joe went out to look for someone to help them get out of the snow. Marly found Mr. Chris, he got his tractor and pulled them out of the snow. They came to stay in the cabin on Maple Hill. They met Fritz, Harry the Hermit, and Mrs. Chris. They also faced some problems like mice in the house and Marly making pancakes and not knowing how to make the fire for the pancakes. Then one of the biggest problems of all! They have a choice… a big choice stay on Maple Hill and help with the sugaring or go back to the city. What will they do?

Why we like this book (or why we don’t)

Phalai: I like this book because it is full of adventures. Joe, Marly’s brother cares about other people he doesn’t know, like Harry the Hermit.

Minori: I like this book because it is full of adventures and you can learn how to help other people in other places.

Kristina: I like this book because I had an experience living in a place like Maple Hill (Alaska). I also experienced sugaring like in the book.

Victoria: I don’t really like this book because there is barely any action. I like books with action. This book is like a life style book

What we would grade this book

Phalai: I would give this book is a C because I got bored in some parts in this book. But I still like this book.

Kristina: I would give this book is a B because some parts of this book took too long to explain.

Minori: I would give this book is a B because the book took too long to explain.

10 year plan to Reduce violence

Who really doesn’t like the idea of violence? Well, we’re going to do something to change our society. I think we should make better laws. If they don’t follow them, we will try to encourage them to stop or show that they’re hurting our society. We could also make a center to help people with their troubles.

My first idea is to make laws so no guns should be handed to children because the child might not know how to use a gun and hurt someone. That’s why I want this law to be made. This is an example of a way small way to cause violence. So that’s why this law should be made, that is my first main idea.

My second main idea is we should also try to encourage them to stop. If we don’t we will have more violence like the Virginia tech. One guy killed About 32 teachers and students and injured about 22 people. That is the reason we should encourage the serial killers to stop. Then some of us will start reducing violence. I hope it will work because I myself am against violence.

My third main idea is to make a center to help people that have problems. That’s maybe why they murder. The people at this center will guide them through all the bad things they did or their troubles. That is my third idea.

So as you can see my ideas are possible only if I can get help. I’m going to relist my ideas. My first is to make laws. My second is try to encourage them to stop. My third is to make a center to help them with their troubles.

The Summer of the Swans

Sara was having the most awkward summer in her whole life. First Sara went to see the swans at the lake; she took her little brother Charlie with her. When they got to the lake Charlie saw the swans and was amazed but he could not say what he felt because he got sick as a little boy. Charlie and Sara didn’t leave the lake till night fall. But Charlie did not want to leave, so Sara had to drag him all the way home.

That night Charlie could not sleep because he was thinking about the swans. So he went down to the lake to find the swans but he got lost somewhere in the forest. The next morning Sara found out Charlie was missing so she started a search party with her friend and Aunt Willie reported the incident to the police.

Our rating for this book is a C-

Why:

We rated this book this grade because, it wasn’t very exciting in the beginning. Once we got to the middle of the book it got more exciting and intense. The book got easier to understand and was happier at the end of the book. The book also went a little slow, and mentioned things that really did not make sense to us.

Our message was:

Your worst enemies can be your friends once you get to know them.

How we related to the characters:

Annalise:

My summers can be so boring like Sara’s. Sometimes I just want to run away and do something exciting.

Christian:

Charlie because I almost was lost once but I was with my friend so we both knew what way to go. But I never had to look for somebody who got lost.

Raina:

I would relate to Sara because I would freak out if my brother or sister got lost. I have had that experience my brother’s friend got lost in a ravine with her dad and dog and it freaked me out.

10 Year Plan to Reduce Violence in our Society!!

There is a lot of violence in the world. It’s affecting other people and other people are getting mad and making more violence. Violence is growing bigger every minute, even now. We need to stop it. But what will we do to stop it?? I have a plan that will take 10 years to reduce violence. But before I tell you the ideas there’s a question I need to ask. Why? Why are we doing this? We know it has to be stopped. So, that’s how I came up with a plan.

I have picked three ideas out of many. There is a problem that needs to be stopped but is still happening in the world. That problem is stealing. This is the most common way of making people mad. So, this problem is stealing. So, this plan is to tell the world about what is going on with violence and stealing because some people don’t know about this problem. Also, society can be messed up with violence and if we don’t do anything, maybe the violence will go on for years.

My second idea is about guns. Guns are the weapons that people use more than knifes. With guns, one person can kill anyone. If we don’t want anyone to get killed WHY do we sell guns to people?? Also guns kill kids by accidents. So my idea is to have a certain places were you could only get guns for a really good reason. You’ll have to get permission and say what and where you’re going to use the gun and when you’re going to return.

The last but not least is my thirdidea. My third idea is about desperate needs. I know that some people steal or do other bad things because they are desperate. This what they are desperate for; food if they are poor or they can also be desperate for drugs. We can do better things than stealing. Instead of stealing we can get help from other people or our community. There’s a lot of places were they help people with their needs. So basically, the idea is to help the people that are desperate and to tell people to get help rather than steal. I mean who would not help other people??

So these were the main ideas to reduce violence. To stop burglering, stop killing people by guns, and help desperate people. We can try these ideas and maybe we can change our society. If we do maybe we can make our society even better than before. So please help and try these ideas so we can change our society and make it a better place for all of us!!

How to Reduce Global Warming in our Society

Did you know that each year polar bears drown and might become extinct because we are polluting the earth? I want to change the way we contribute to globe warming!!! First, I would like to try and ride bikes or walk instead of using cars. Secondly, I would like to try and stop using big factories. My third solution is to teach other people about global warming and what it will do in the future.

So, how can people try and stop global warming? First, you can try and use bikes or walk to the place you want to go instead of using cars or other motorized vehicles. Or, if you don’t have a bike or it’s to long to walk you can car pool with your friends or family. The more people per car the more you’re saving gas. Also, if you can’t car pool and you have to have a car, buy a Prius because those kinds of cars are better than other cars because they save gas. Tell other people to use bikes or walk or even to car pool with other people

My second solution is to stop making big factories because all the black stuff that’s coming out of there is lots and lots of pollution. The carbon dioxide in side the pollution is causing most of the global warming. Also, if you’re trying to find a job, try and avoid those big factories that have those big smoke stacks with black smoke coming out. If people don’t work there, it might make big factories shut down because there’s no body to work there so that’s less pollution. You can also prevent global warming by not burning plastics or other things like plastic bags because those things are toxic and if you burn them they contribute to global warming.

My third main idea to prevent global warming is to have people that come in and teach students and even adults about global warming. We should have free classes once a month that talk about global warming. We should also have posters on the side of the road that are saying things about global warming and what it will do if we don’t try and stop it now.

So what am I saying? I’m saying, try and use bikes or walk instead of using cars. Or to try and avoid working in big factories that have big smoke stacks. And also teach other people about global warming. You can even start to day to make a change about global warming!!!

Sarah, Plain and Tall

Our second book review

Sarah, Plain and Tall is a book about two kids; Caleb and Anna, whose mom died the day after giving birth to Caleb. Their dad puts out an advertisement in the newspaper for a mom and/or wife. A person named Sarah responds. She is plain and tall. They get four letters, one is signed “Very Truly Yours, Sarah Elisabeth Wheaton.” The second one is the same as the first. The third one was signed “very truly yours, Sarah Elisabeth” the fourth one was signed “Sarah.” We think that’s a message that she’s coming because each one is getting shorter and also the letters are also getting shorter than in the beginning. On one of the letters she said that she was going to be wearing a yellow bonnet and a yellow dress. When Sarah got there, she meets the family and is wearing a yellow bonnet and a yellow dress. We think she wore yellow because yellow is a happy color so she’s saying she’s happy to meet the family. In one of the letters Sarah says that she would only stay for a month to decide if she would stay or not and she has a cat named seal. From the beginning of the book Sarah comes and acts like a mother to Anna and Caleb. The first month Sarah is there they have different adventures like swimming in a cow pond or when it snowed hail the size of apples or when Sarah scrambled up the roof and fixes the roof during a storm. The message of the book is to love your family, friends and pets too.

Clay can relate to the characters because he has been to a farm, has rode horses, has been to the sea, has been to the states and he has been in a barn and has a cat and has fed farm animals. Jake can relate to the characters because he has been to a farm and has rode horses and he has been in a barn and also loves the sea and he also has fed and taken care of barn animals.

We recommend this book for 3^rd-5^th grade because it’s a little bit easy to read and it’s good because it tells about how the people lived a long time ago in the states. We both rate this book a B because some parts were funny but some parts felt like nothing interesting was happening.

10 year plan to reduce

VIOLENCE!!!!!

Have you ever thought about violence? Has it ever bothered you that there is usually something in the newspaper about violence? Well I have a few ideas on how to reduce most of the violence in our society. And they will take about ten years to develop into strong solutions to help our country.

My first idea is that people should stop making all these guns! Who even invented these things? And who would even think about such a horrible thing? Falling coconuts is enough but guns, and bombs, is just is just too much. You should keep a guard dog instead of a gun.

My second idea is to stop all these wars! After all that is why so many people are being killed every day. What if the army general comes and takes away your son and he gets killed in a war, how would you feel? Although it would take about ten years to stop all the wars in the world, if we could, I would.

My third idea is to make a special lock that can’t be picked, so people won’t sneak into other people’s houses. Or sneak into stores because people would want the person to go to jail. And what if that person was innocent because the guy that did it blamed him

And the police believed him. Would you want that to happen?

So like the title it would probably take about ten years to make my plans to start working. And hopefully they will. But I will need your help to make them work.
